Remove Air Con Compressor Mk 1

Hi all - I have a 2.0l MK 1 and the air con compressor has seized. Looking around they are expensive to replace, not worth it as the car is 14 years old now. I have read on various sites about people removing the compressor and putting a smaller aux belt in - so having no air con. Does anybody have any experience or advice on the subject?

where abouts in sussex are you?i have a compressor in my garage minus the clutch,but this was for a mk2 dunno if it would fit yours???

Thanks gregers - I did try to search but didn't have much luck. I am in Essex ;-)
